The New Ireland Provincial Government has approved proposals to seek the development of an “all weather” international deep-sea port for shore based fishing operations, general freight and cruise ships.
This is to support the concept of an integrated free trade zone, fishing, tourism and transport hub project. Stage one of the proposal also requires port side development for the fishing fleet and a deep-sea port for frozen fish export at the Hamburg Harbour.
New Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan said Hamburg Harbour had been identified as the suitable site for the international seaport that offers protection from southerly and easterly winds and provided ample space for a wharf, seafood processing and storage, fuel dock, industrial area, fishing boat manufacture, power supply and waste treatment.
He said Emirau was the ideal location for implementation of the international seaport and transport hub because it was the most strategic and centrally located for regional transportation.
The seaport would support the fishing based operations which stood to open new market opportunities for fresh sea food and particularly fresh tuna for the lucrative fish market in Japan and throughout Asia and the world.
The New Ireland Provincial Executive Council had agreed to open talks on the proposed integrated free trade zone, Fishing, tourism and transport hub project that encompassed a wide range of business opportunities never before available in New Ireland and PNG.
Sir Julius said he hoped to make Emirau the new distribution point for all inbound and outgoing cargo from industrialized countries of the north and the southern regions through PNG in the shortest and cost effective manner.
