The dredging, costing the Yunnan Shipping Authority CNY93 million (US$12.60 million) improved the standard of the Jinghong-China/Burma Border Tablet waterway from Grade Six to Grade Five. The same was done to the 331-kilometre waterway from the China/Burma Border Tablet to Laos, the report said.
Chinese authorities have also approved investment of CNY140 million in a multi-function terminal along the Jinghong-China-Burma Border Tablet waterway, which will be the first terminal to mainly handle containers along the China section of the river.
The Jinghong-China-Burma Border Tablet waterway is the busiest section of Lancang-Mekong River in China. Statistics show the waterway section handled 390,000 tons of cargo in 2006.
The 4,880-kilometre Mekong River is the six longest river in the world, connecting six nations in Asia. Shipping development along the river has been a key co-operation field between China and ASEAN.
