Prime Minister Vladimir Putin signed a decree on February 27, 2010 (N236-p) establishing the boundaries of Olya Commercial Sea Port of Astrakhan Region. The port boundaries now include 14 onshore areas and 2 harborage areas.
Port Olya is located 100 km south off Astrakhan city on the 67-th km of the Volga-Caspian canal near the village of Olya. The port specializes in transshipment of general cargo, container and ferry goods. Besides, Port of Olya having a border and customs control point is open year-round for foreign-flagged ships. The port’s terminal handles outbound commodities transported through the Caspian Sea to Iran, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and India. In 2009 the Port Authority reported some 750.000 tons shipped via its terminals and almost 1.000 ship calls.
