Russian State Duma to adjust the reform of railroad transport

The State Duma Committee on Transport held a meeting recently on the reform of rail transport in Russia. MPs studied the current state and the future development of the industry. The Committee will hand over its recommendations to Russian Govt, the press service of the RZD, Russian Railways said.

The Committee members noted the positive results of the railway industry reform. Overall, from 2003 to 2008 investments in the sector rose from 140 billion to 480 billion rubles.

During the period 2002-2009 private investments in railroad business exceeded 300 billion rubles. This helped update and build up the RZD’s fleet from 817.000 units in 2003 to 985.000 by the end of 2009. Independently operating railroad companies also gained. For the last 5 years they have increased their fleet by more than 120.000 units.

However, the document reads, the development of railway transport largely at the expense of Russian Railways, RZD OJSC without changing the economic model of its operation, the growth of private investments and increasing govt. support would hardly be impossible.
