Passenger port Marine Facade in St. Petersburg accepts its first vessel

St. Petersburg Governor Valentina Matvienko announced at the greeting ceremony that by 2010 the marine passenger terminal is to become the world’s largest specialized sea port.

According to Valentina Matvienko, the number of tourists visiting St. Petersburg has doubled in the last two years to 330,000 people per year. "Each tourist spends at least EUR 160 in the city, which is quite good for the city economy," the Governor said.

Marine Facade is a strategic project of St. Petersburg being implemented within the framework of Public Private Partnership. The project envisages creation of a new district with a unique marine passenger port, residential area and business center.

The project is to be implemented in three stages: the 6th and the 7th berths are to be put into operation in 2008, the 3rd, the 4th and the 5th – in 2009, the 1st and the 2nd – in 2010. The passenger port is to occupy 33 hectares of reclaimed territory in the western part of VasilievskyIsland. The ports water area is to make 77 hectares. The federal budget is to allocate RUR 8 bln for the project implementation while RUR 27 bln are to come from off-budget sources.
