The world's first offshore LNG terminal arrived at its final location in the Adriatic Sea off Italy, where it will be capable of supplying about 10% of Italy's natural gas requirements.
The Adriatic LNG terminal left its construction site in Algeciras, Spain, Aug. 30 for the 1,700-mile trip to its final destination, where it arrived Sept. 15. The terminal has been positioned about 10 miles off Porto Levante, Italy, in 95 ft of water and will be connected via pipeline to Italy's natural gas grid.
The terminal is designed to store and regasify LNG to deliver 775 MMcfd of gas when it reaches full operational capacity in 2009. It will receive LNG produced from Qatar's North field, which contains more than 900 tcf of gas, the largest nonassociated gas field in the world.
The terminal is owned by ExxonMobil Italiana Gas, Edison, and Qatar Terminal Ltd.—a Qatar Petroleum 100% owned subsidiary.
