India's Jawaharlal Nehru Port exempt from power cuts

Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) has been exempted by the Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) from a 24-hour power cut to be implemented once-a-week, provided the port cuts its power consumption by 10 percent, DNA reported.
This move follows a letter sent by the Jawaharlal Nehru Port to the MSEB, stating their position as a "continuous process industry" requiring non-stop power.
The port had previously received a notice from the power company, threatening a once-a-week 24-hour power cut at the port.
A senior JNPT official said that through various means the port was working to ensure five to 10 percent savings in power through the reduction of consumption to non-core operational areas, including the port and administrative buildings.
The port handles almost 60 percent of India's container traffic, and a power cut would impact trade and vessel operations.
