Germanischer Lloyd launches new boxship rules

Hamburg-based classification society Germanischer Lloyd has launched a revised edition of its classification rules for containerships which take into account the increased size of vessels and provide more documentation.
"Shipbuilders and designers have requested us to spell the calculations and requirements out. It is not only the rules, but also why they apply and how to calculate them", said Jan-Olaf Probst at Germanischer Lloyd's press conference at SMM.
GL says all requirements are now compiled in one concise, customer- and user-friendly document. The new edition also comes with enhanced graphics as well as updated tables and illustrations. By introducing the new classification rules, GL assists shipyards and shipowners in the challenges of building containerships: The level of detail in the new containership rules has been expanded.
Meanwhile GL says it will class seven ultra-large container vessels to be built at Hyundai Heavy Industries, The seven 13,100 TEU vessels are for German shipowner MPC Capital. Steel cutting for the first vessel will begin in November 2010 at HHI's yard in Ulsan with a construction time of nine months per vessel and the final ship will be delivered in June 2012.
