Loading at Oktyabrskaya Railway is likely to fall 22-24% in 2009
In 2009, loading at Oktyabrskaya Railway (OZD, branch of Russian Railways OJSC) is likely to fall by 22-24%, year-on-year, PortNews IAA learnt from Igor Lobko, head of OZD corporate service center. According to the source, it is an approximate forecast and may be adjusted depending on the development of the economic situation.
According to Igor Lobko, the cargo flow improved in March as compared with January and February of the current year. In January-February the loading fell by 35%, while in March the decrease totaled 23%. Moreover, turnover of oil products and fertilizers increased against 2008. OZD representative thinks this tendency is most likely to continue. At the same time, maximal decrease was registered in the sector of timber and construction cargo.
Besides, Igor Lobko said the project on improvement of the railway infrastructure in Ust-Luga port is going on according to the schedule within the framework the 3-year long program. However it may be adjusted depending on the economic situation development.
Oktyabrskaya Railway (North-West region of Russia) is one of the country’s largest railways. Itsoperational length is 10,334 km. In 2008, the railway carried 2.3 million tonnes of cargo (+4%, year-on-year).
