Tuticorin port handled 4,38,548 TEUs in fiscal 2008-09
The Tuticorin port has achieved a record cargo handling of 220.11 lakh tonnes during the fiscal 2008-09 with an overall increase of 2.47 per cent over the previous year. It handled 4,38,548 TEUs ( 20-foot equivalent units) during the fiscal. The main commodities handled at the port include thermal coal, container, industrial coal and general cargo such as granites, timber logs, fertilisers and maize, according to a press release issued by the Tuticorin Port Trust (TPT). Mr G.J. Rao, Chairman, TPT, said the port trust reported a net profit of Rs 81.5 crore during the fiscal compared with Rs 79 crore in the previous year. Operating income was Rs 220.65 crore and operating expenditure was Rs. 99.47 crore. Mr Rao said some of the projects to be undertaken during the current fiscal include commissioning of cargo berth No. 9 for handling of cargo; foundation stone laid for second container terminal; starting of development of Inner Harbour (First Phase) and inauguration of four lane road, the release says.
