India's Paradip port cargo handling up 9.36% in 2008-09

In 2008-09, the Paradip Port Trust (PPT) handled 46.41 million tonnes (mt) of cargo traffic, up from 42.44 mt in 2007-08, thus posting 9.36 per cent growth despite economic downturn globally, according to a PPT press release. “In terms of rate of growth of traffic, the port occupies third position among all major ports”, the release says.
Among the principal commodities handled during the year under review, thermal coal topped the list with a throughput of 14.70 mt (13.35 mt) comprising 10.83 mt (10.66 mt) of coastal shipment for various power plants in the South and 3.87 mt (2.69 mt) of import.
Among other commodities were iron ore 14.15 mt (12.94 mt), coking coal 5.43 mt ( 4.72 mt), fertiliser raw materials 4.61 mt ( 4.83 mt) and POL 3.24 mt including 1.58 mt of crude (1.75 mt with no crude), the release adds.
