RZD Corporate Communications Department has informed www.rzd-partner.ru that cargo traffic on the Russian railway network was reduced by 21.8 % in March 2009, in comparison to the similar period of the last year, and was only 93.2 million tons, RZD-Partner repotrs.
This was a growth on February's figures of 5.7 %.
A total of 247.6 million tons of cargo was transported by Russian Railways in the first quarter of 2009. The decrease on the similar period of 2008 was 27.1 %.
Transit cargo turnover on Russian railways from January to March was 495 billion tons/km (a fall of 19.7%), including 181.4 tons/km in March (a fall of 15.8%).
In the first quarter of 2009 RZD transported 258.8 million passengers, that is 8.9 % lower than the same period last year, including 88.4 million people transported in March.
Transit passenger turnover from January to March was 28.6 billion passengers/km (a fall of 12.3 %), including 10.1 billion passengers/km in March (a fall of 14.8 %).
