Russia ready to build first LNG carrier
The Sovcomflot company plans to sign a contract with the Admiralty shipyard in Sankt Petersburg about the construction of the first ever Russian LNG carrier.
General Director of the Admiralty yard Vladimir Aleksandrov says to the Baltic Information Agency that his yard is preparing for the task and that Japanese, Korean and French experiences have been carefully studied.
The projected LNG carrier will be 260 meter long, 35 meter wide and have a capacity of 80,000 cubic meters of gas. The ship is believes to be handed over to the Sovcomflot in year 2012-2013.
Mr. Aleksandrov says that a contract on the ship will be signed in the course of this year. The Admiralty shipyard is reportedly also planning the construction of a second LNG carrier.
Sovcomflot is Russia’s biggest shipyards with 132 vessels and a total of 9,39 million deadweight tons. The company operates eight LNG carriers. However, none of these are built in Russia
As BarentsObserver reported last week, LNG is increasingly becoming a priority for Gazprom.
