n January-March 2009, 327,100 tons of cargo were handled at the small ports of Latvia, which is an increase of 0.4% on the results of the first three months of 2008, as the Transport Ministry informs.
In the first two months of the year, Latvia's small ports handled 2.9% less cargo than in the respective period last year.
Skulte Port reported the largest cargo turnover of 142,800 tons – a 7.9% increase on the first quarter of 2008, when it handled 132,400 tons of cargo.
Salacgriva Port handled 85,900 tons of cargo (35.5% increase), Mersrags Port – 87,900 tons (20.6% decrease), Roja Port – 9,600 tons, and Pavilosta Port –1,000 tons.
100 tons of cargo was handled at the Engure Port in January-March 2009.
Altogether, cargo turnover at all Latvian ports reached 16.6 million tons in the first quarter of this year, or 1.4% down on the results of the same period last year.
7.452 million tons of cargo was handled at the Freeport of Riga, 976,100 tons – in Liepaja and 7.842 million tons – at Ventspils Port.
