NYK plans to launch super energy efficient freighter in 2030

Shipping giant Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) plans to launch a super energy efficient container ship in the year 2030, the company has announced. The freighter design, dubbed the "NYK Super Eco Ship 2030," will utilize a combination of new technologies that the company believes will be ready by 2030 to reduce CO2 emissions by 69 percent compared with today's vessels.
The Super Eco Ship will use liquid natural gas fuel cells as its primary power source, cutting CO2 emissions by 32 percent. The remainder of the CO2 emissions savings will come from solar energy, harvested from solar panels coating the deck, and sails to catch the wind.
Making the ship lighter in combination with a coating that reduces resistance as the ship moves through the water will vastly reduce the energy needed to power the ship.
Looking further into the future, NYK plans to install hydrogen fuel cells in its freighters when that technology is expected to become available in 2050, reducing CO2 emissions to zero.
