The Super Eco Ship will use liquid natural gas fuel cells as its primary power source, cutting CO2 emissions by 32 percent. The remainder of the CO2 emissions savings will come from solar energy, harvested from solar panels coating the deck, and sails to catch the wind.
Making the ship lighter in combination with a coating that reduces resistance as the ship moves through the water will vastly reduce the energy needed to power the ship.
Looking further into the future, NYK plans to install hydrogen fuel cells in its freighters when that technology is expected to become available in 2050, reducing CO2 emissions to zero.
