India's Paradip port to handle 100 million ton cargo by 2016

With several developmental projects in the pipeline, the Paradip port is all set to emerge as one of the top three major ports in the country by 2016 with a traffic handling capacity of 100 million tonnes, its chairman K Raghuramaiah said. Talking to newsmen here yesterday, Mr Raghuramaiah said, ''Despite global slowdown in the world market, the port has registered a growth of 9.36 per cent in traffic handling during 2008-2009 compared to 2.13 per cent achieved by all the major ports in the country.'' ''This year, the port had handled a record 46.41 million tonne cargo, which included an all time record of 34.35 million tonne rail borne traffic, and set a target to handle traffic of 57 million tonne by the current fiscal,'' he added.
Mr Raghuramaiah said the port had registered a substantial improvement in its financial performance and made an operating income of Rs 700.21 crore during 2008-2009 and repaid all the loans including the Rs 800 crore loan obtained by the ADB bank in 2001.
He said an iron berth, with an estimated cost of Rs 504.77 crore, under the Built Operate Transfer (BOT) basis through Public Private Partnership(PPP) mode, has been taken up with the completion of the tendering process.
The concessional agreement would be signed before May 2009.
The ministry, the PPT Chairman said, had also taken a decision to construct another coal berth with back up facilities on BOT basis through PPP mode.
A 10 million tonne capacity of oil berth at an estimated cost of Rs 172.97 crore, purely from the internal resources, would be completed by March 2012 in view of the Oil Refinery coming up at 10 kms south of Port by the Indian Oil Limited at an estimated cost of Rs 35,000 crore, he said.
It has been proposed to construct a two multi-purpose berths through PPP mode with an investment of Rs 359 crore to handle the container and other clean cargo, Mr Raghuramaiah said.
The project, he said, is in all likely to be completed by March 2012.
