Output of Ukrainian shipyards down by almost 60% in Q1 09
In the first quarter of 2008, Ukrainian shipyards slowed down production by almost 60%. In the reported period, production decline in machine building industry made 47%, year-on-year, that in shipbuilding – 59%, Gudok writes.
The State Statistics Committee of Ukraine forecasts that April decline in shipbuilding is likely to make 60.9% against 42% in the industry as a whole. Last year it was one of the leading industries with a backlog of orders totaling $240 mln and annual growth of 0.6% with the 22=pct decline in production.
According to Viktor Lisitski, first vice-president of the Association of Shipbuilders, the decline in production was registered at the majority of enterprises representing the industry.
It should be reminded that Nibulon Ltd. (Ukraine) has signed a contract with Wadan Yards Оkean for construction of 24 sea-and-river going barges. n 2009, Nibulon Ltd. started implementation of an investment project on construction of 7 elevators with total capacity exceeding 250,000 tonnes, creation of its own fleet with total deadweight of 100,000 tonnes and construction of tugboats. The project is valued at $150 mln. Within the framework of the project there is a plan to build river terminals and barges as well as to buy and build tugboats (all in all 14 river and sea tugboats).
