Russia is currently holding 29 pirates in custody on board their naval vessels patrolling the Gulf of Aden. France is currently holding 15 pirates, eleven have been sent for trial in Kenya. In total, France has held 71 pirates and killed four. The US holds one pirate awaiting trial in New York and has killed three.
With pirate attacks off Somalia occuring further and further off the coast, employers and unions have agreed to extend the high-risk zone, where seafarers receive double pay as well as death and disability compensation, to the eastern Somali seaboard down to the Kenyan border and 400 miles off the coast.
