Hyundai Heavy, the world's No. 1 shipbuilder, signed a contract with KT Corp. yesterday, which sees the latter establish a wireless internet network by the end of August to cover the 5.45-million square meter territory of its dockyard.
Once established, workers will be able to transmit or receive data and communicate with each other, with a hand-held terminal at any corner of the vast workplace, Hyundai officials explained.
"The envisioned system will raise efficiency and reduce costs across the board," they said.
"The establishment of the WiBro network is part of our long-term plan to introduce a digital shipyard," Hwang Si-young, the firm's chief information officer said.
"We will continue to sharpen our competitiveness by converging highly-advanced information technologies with shipbuilding," he said.
