Admiralty Shipyards starts shipbuilder's trials of Varshavyanka class submarine Stary Oskol
Admiralty Shipyards kicked off shipbuilder's sea trials of new Varshavyanka class stealth submarine "Stary Oskol", the shipbuilding company's newspaper "Admiralteyets" reports.
The submarine trials will be conducted at the Baltic Sea naval proving ground until the end of March. Then the submarine will dock at Baltiysk. After that the warship will undergo two-week state acceptance trials.
"Stary Oskol" is the third in a series of six diesel-electric stealth submarines of Project 636.3 of Varshavyanka class, built for the Russian Black Sea Fleet. The submarine keel-laying was held in August 2012 and the vessel was launched in August 2014.
Non-nuclear powered submarines of improved Kilo-class (NATO reporting name) or Varshavyanka class advanced project 636 feature combat effectiveness, a combination of stealth capabilities and target detection range, the newest navigation system, modern automated information management system, powerful high-speed torpedo and missiles. The boats are mainly intended for anti-shipping and anti-submarine operations in relatively shallow waters.
