ClassNK receives Clean Shipping Award at Seatrade Awards 2017

Leading classification society ClassNK received the Clean Shipping Award at the 29th Seatrade Awards held at Grosvenor House, City of London on 30 June for its efforts to improve the standards of ship recycling through its PrimeShip-GREEN/SRM software solution. The Seatrade Awards are held every year in London to recognize companies and individuals for their contributions to the maritime industry, the society said in a media release.

The Seatrade Awards distinguished panel of judges awarded ClassNK with the Clean Shipping Award for its work in promoting safer and greener ship recycling practices in line with the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, 2009, requiring shipbuilders to develop a ship-specific Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) identifying locations and quantities of hazardous substances on board. ClassNK developed PrimeShip-GREEN/SRM allowing shipbuilders and suppliers to digitally exchange hazardous substances data for more than 1,000 products on board, and develop IHM almost automatically, drastically reducing the manpower required for IHM development.

Speaking on the occasion, Chairman and President Koichi Fujiwara said: “We are deeply honored to receive the Seatrade Clean Shipping Award, and are proud that our contributions to protecting the marine environment have been recognized by the industry. Among the many activities we carry out as part of our mission to ensure a safer, greener future for the entire maritime industry, enabling safe and environmentally-friendly ship recycling is a higher priority for us. PrimeShip-GREEN/SRM was developed thanks to the invaluable support of leading shipping companies, shipbuilders, and suppliers. This software has already helped thousands of organizations to speedily and accurately prepare IHMs in line with the proposed regulations of the Hong Kong Convention, and is paving the way for a higher standard of ship recycling worldwide.”

Used by 150 shipbuilders and 2,700 suppliers, PrimeShip-GREEN/SRM has become the standard IHM software in East Asia and beyond.
