NYK announces delivery of new wood-chip carrier for Hokuetsu Corporation

A new wood-chip carrier for Hokuetsu Corporation was delivered on September 11 at Oshima Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. in Saikai city, Nagasaki, Japan, and a naming and delivery ceremony was held on the same day. NYK and Hokuetsu have a long-term contract for this vessel.

This new carrier is an eco ship that uses about 15 percent less fuel compared to conventional wood-chip carriers. The ship was named “Snow Camellia” after the prefectural tree of Niigata prefecture, the location of the Hokuetsu paper mill receiving the wood chips. Moreover, the port of Niigata will be celebrating its 150th anniversary in January 2019.

In accordance with its new medium-term management plan “Staying Ahead 2022 with Digitalization and Green,” the NYK Group seeks to secure stable freight rates through long-term contracts and continue its efforts to contribute to a stable supply of wood chips.
