Throughput of Klaipeda port up 20.5% to 15.82 mln t in H1 08

In January-June, 2008, the port of Klaipeda handled 15.82 million tonnes of cargo (+20.5%, year-on-year), the company reports. In the reported period, transshipment of oil products amounted to 5.17 million tonnes (+33.3%, year-on-year), dry loose and bulk cargo – 5.062 million tonnes (+34%, year-on-year) including 0.62 million tonnes of grain (up 2.2 times), fertilizers – over 3.16 million tonnes. Transshipment of containers grew by 20.8%, year-on-year, ro-ro cargo – down by 4.4%.

In January-June 2008, Butinge terminal handled 4.38 million tonnes of crude oil (up 1.9 times, year-on-year).  In the reported period, the terminal handled 43 vessels (against 23 vessels in January-June 2007).

Klaipeda port (Lithuania) is the northernmost ice – free port on the Eastern coast of the Baltic Sea.

19 big stevedoring companies, ship - repair and ship – building yards operate within the port and all marine business and cargo handling services are being rendered. The annual port cargo handling capacity is up to 40 million tons. In 2007-2013 it is planned to invest some EUR 600 million into the port development.
