Cargo turnover of Klaipeda port (Lithuania) down by 11%, Jan.-Oct. 2009

Cargo turnover of Klaipeda port (Lithuania) decreased by 11% (to 22, 508,624.5 tons) in January-October, 2009 as compared to the corresponding period figures of 2008, stated port administration. Transhipment volumes of liquid cargoes decreased by 5.2% (8,642,998.6 tons), of dry and bulk cargoes fell by 7.2% (to 7,656,000 thousand tons), general cargoes handling went down by 21.8% (to 6,209,619 tons).

In January-October, 2009 7 mln 18 thousand 974.3 tons of crude oil was transhipped via Butinge terminal which is 4.7% less as compared to the 2008 figures.

Klaipeda port is the northernmost ice-free port on the Eastern coast of the Baltic Sea, largest transportation centre of the republic of Lithuania. 17 big stevedoring companies, ship - repair and ship – building yards operate within the port and all marine business and cargo handling services are being rendered. The annual port cargo handling capacity is up to 40 million tons.
