Singapore's Neptune Orient Lines , the world's fifth-biggest container shipping firm, said it carried 14 percent more containers in the four weeks to October 16 versus a year ago.
NOL said in a statement it carried the equivalent of 211,700 40-foot containers, or FEU, on its ships in the period, up from 186,500 a year earlier.
"The increase in volume was mainly due to higher volumes lifted in several trade lanes. Lower average revenue per FEU was die to lower core freight rates and lower bunker recovery," the company said in a statement to the stock exchange.
The average revenue from each container fell 29 percent from a year ago to $2,254, but it was higher than the revenue per container recorded in the previous four week period to September 18 of $2,247.
Neptune Orient Lines in late October reported a bigger-than-expected third quarter loss and warned that losses will continue at least until the first half of 2010.
