Ventspils port cargo turnover (Latvia) down by 3.5%, Jan.-Oct. 2009

Cargo turnover of the port of Ventspils (Latvia) decreased by 3.5% (22.72  mln tons) within 10 months 2009 as compared to the corresponding period of 2008, stated Baltic Course. In the reporting period the volume of liquid cargo transhipment amounted to 15.02 mln tons, the figure grew by 128,000 tons (+0.85%) against the previous year, volume of dry cargo transhipped 6.5 mln tons, general cargo – 1.21mln tons.

Within 10 months the volume of wood chips transhipped increased by 36% (386, 000 tons), of coal – by 28.73% (to 4.53 mln tons), liquid chemical cargo - 15% (to 112,000 tons) against 2008. 13,535 passengers were transported, 5,810 - vehicles and 28,000 - trucks.

Ventspils port is located near Venta river. There are terminals for loading and unloading of crude and oil products, liquid chemicals and fertilizers, metal and coal, timber and fish, containers and Ro-Ro trailers. Liquid cargo area has 9 berths ranging in depth between 11.5 and 17.5 m. These berths can accommodate AFRAMAX type vessels of 150 000 DWT. In 2008, the port handled 28.57 million tons of cargo.
