Singapore's October throughput up 7.9% to 2.31 million TEUs

The port of Singapore's October container throughput rose 7.9 percent month-on-month to 2.31 million TEUs after a 5.8 percent dip in September, suggesting the slow uptick in the container sector is managing to hold, Business Times Singapore reported.
At dominant port operator PSA, a 7.7 per ent month-on-month rise to 2.24 million TEUs in October was overshadowed by an 8.2 percent year-on-year drop from the previous October's 2.52 million TEUs.
For the year-to-date, throughput was 20.67 million TEUs - 16.1 per ent lower than the 24.65 million in the first 10 months of the year last year. But it was the smallest year-to-date drop yet, and the comparative figure has been steadily falling from a high of 18 per cent in May.
At smaller operator Jurong Port, throughput rose 12.5 percent to 72,000 TEUs in October, from 64,000 in September. But year-on-year, this was still down 11.1 per cent from 81,000 TEUs in October 2008.
