It is necessary to remind that transit navigation on Volgo-Balt was prolonged from November 15 to November 20, 2009 г.
As PortNews IAA informed earlier, the volume of shipment by river vessels on Volga-Baltic water way decreased by almost 10% (13.3 mln tons) (both directions – to the Volga and to the Baltic Sea) in May-September, 2009 as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. As per Vladimit Nikolaev, Head of GBU Volgo-Balt, within 9-month period of 2009 lumber shipments reduced by 42%, volume of construction materials shipped – by 40%. At the same time there is 73%-increase of metals shipment, 33%-increase of chemical cargoes, 10%-increase of petroleum products volume of other cargoes increased by 14%. As per Vladimit Nikolaev estimation, cargo turnover of Volgo-Balt will decrease by 10% (16.5 mln tons of cargo) in 2009 navigation against 2008 navigation period volumes.
Volgo-Balt (Volga-Baltic waterway) is one of the most significant water routes comprising integrated deep-water system of inland waterways of Russia’s European part. It is a complex of engineering facilities uniting 4900 kilometers of operated waterways including 3270 kilometers with guaranteed dimensions, 11 locks with water lift from 11 to 18 meters, three water-power stations, 25 earth dikes and dams, 12 ferry crossings, 9 bridge crossings, 8 lighthouses in the Ladoga lake, over 5000 signs of navigation situation, 273 units of service fleet.
