The port handles about 1 mln tons of cargo annually.
In addition to that Makhachkala port development envisages port cargo turnover increase to15 mln tons per year (it is mainly crude oil liquid cargo) and is considered in relation to Olya port.
There are 17 terminals operating in Astrakhan to the date 4 of which have cross-points within the city.
Astrakhan is located in the Volga river estuary and is one of Russian ports in the Caspian Sea. River and all the adjacent water areas freeze in winter period. There is Volga-Caspian canal linking the Caspian Sea and Astrakhan. Its length is 101.5 miles (188 km), depth – 5 m, navigation width – 100-120 m. Handling operations in the points of handling are carried our by 10 stevedoring companies. Cargo turnover of the port amounted to 3.6 mln tons within 10-month period, 2009.
Makhachkala is a Caspian port located on western coast of the Caspian Sea, Dagestan Republic. There is a year-round navigation in the port. The port handles oil products, mineral-construction , general and lumber cargoes. The port tranships cargo flows from Russia, Buelorussia, the Ukraine, Baltics, as well as cargoes from Iran, Turkey, Mid Asia. The port is served by railway station Makhachkala of North-Caucasian railway department. Cargo turnover of the port amounted to 4.4 mln tons within 10-month period, 2009.
Olya Commercial seaport is located 100 km to the south from Astrakhan, at 67 km of Volga-Caspian canal, in Olya village. There are two construction stages envisaged in the concept of Olya port cargo department development. There are three berths working on a round-year basis in the port, their depth is 5 m.
