Dmitriy Medvedev on creation of separate international criminal court for piracy problems

Dmitriy Medvedev, RF President, supports the idea of creation of a separate international criminal court designed to cope with piracy problems, informed RIA Novosti with reference to Dmitriy Medvedev that took the ground at a meeting with the Ministers of Transport of the number of foreign countries.

‘A number of my colleagues suggest using the existing national courts especially in the area of active piracy but is is not a solution. I think we should either go back to this issue (of a separate court creation) or vest the corresponding competence onto the operating courts,’ said the President.

‘We are working over the problem and will continue doing that,’ stated the Head of the Government.

At the same time he pointed out that the efforts taken have not yet brought any results. Such situation is caused by the fact that piracy has become quite a profitable business which is hard to control.

As per Medvedev, another reason is insufficient consolidation of opinions of international community.

‘The problem is that when we catch the pirates, Russia has already numerously done it, it is not clear what to do with them. If we give them back to their country they continue piracy next day’, said the President. He also mentioned it might be possible to take cruel measures, but they don’t go in compliance with our understanding of humanity.

That is why the only opportunity is improvement of criminal procedures.
