Russian nuclear-powered fleet to take delivery of a container-carrier for SNF in 2010

In 2010 Russian nuclear-powered fleet willbe enlarged by a modern container-carrier (4 thou tons water displacement) for shipment of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and radioactive waste. The vessel will be built for the Russian Maritime Register class (RS) under the agreement between the State Corporation Rosatom and the Ministry of Economic Development of Italy, classification society press-service reported.

A design of a new universal atomic ice-breaker for a year-round escorting of heavy-tonnage vessels and their convoys in the west part of the Arctics as well as in the shallow waters of the Enisey river and Ob bay is reported to be elaborated.  The ice-breaker is designed in accordance with the RS requirements.

World’s first ice-breaker Lenin is announced to have been given the RS document on December 3, 2009.
