Russia, Japan and Korea consider a passenger/cargo ferry project

Experts of the Nitsu Japan Research Institute have completed studies on feasibility of a trilateral project during their visit to Nakhodka city district for cargo / passenger ferry line that could connect ports of Nakhodka (Russia), Maizuru (Japan) and Pohang (South Korea), the press office of the local administration said.

The experts of the Institute were commissioned by the city administration and Maizuru Kyoto Prefecture, as well as the Association of Maizuru Port. A working group of the Institute, headed by the Director of Research Department of Economics Miki Watanabe has visited recently Russian Nakhodka, special Seaport of Kozmino, Vostochny Port and the Fishing Port. The Japan delegation has met with the the head of Nakhodka city Oleg Kolyadin and other officials.

According to Mickey Watanabe, in recent years the economic interests of Japan has been drifting from the American freight lines to Asian and European routes, freight flow to the west coast of Japan. A key role in this redirection fall on the port of Maizuru with its new terminal to be launched in mid-March.

The developing project means the cargo-passenger ferry service between the Japanese port of Maizuru, Korean Pohang and one of the Russian ports. Nakhodka has turned to be the most appropriate option with its ranged transportation and logistics services, a factor of much importance for further shipments of inbound goods to the European part of Russia and north-eastern provinces of China.

Mr. Kolyadin said the city administration would be interested in the implementation of the project and assured the Japanese side of Nakhodka’s full support to the project.
