Russian Railways weighs a 30% cut in containers transit tariff via Trans-Siberian Railroad

Russian Railways (RZD OJSC) has been considering a 30-percent discount on containerized cargoes hauled from the Russia’s Far East ports to the European part of the country, Finmarket reports citing the RZD statement.

Most likely, the transportation cost (from the departure station to destination station), say, for spare parts from Japan to car makers factories in Kaluga would be at least $1.000 higher than that of carriage by sea (roughly 30% below the current tariff). However, the Company said, the consignee saves about 20 days on rail transportation.

The cost of shipments of goods in containers, for example, from Japan to Moscow, is calculated from the cost of feeder transportation (a port in Japan - the port of Vladivostok), port charges, stevedoring operations, customs clearance, with the added tariff for transportation of cargo by rail (the price list 10-01). To reduce the transit rate, RZD will have to settle the issue with all the participants of intermodal transportation.

Car makers and traders are all interested in shipment of autos spare parts from Japan via railroad. Managing Director of Toyota Motor Keith Simmons told recently in an interview with journalists there had been trial shipments of spare parts in containers to the car maker plant in Kaluga.

Currently, the cargoes are being shipped to Russia from Japan largely by sea through the ports of Finland.
