Liepaja Port’s throughput up 3.3%, to 1 million tons in Q1, 2010

The port of Liepaja (Latvia) posted a 3.3-percent gain in freight volumes in January-March this year, to 1 million tons, PortNews IAA reported quoting the Port Authority.

The port’s Q1,10 statistics show a 3.8 drop in volumes of grain, to 370.800 tons, as shipments of crude oil rose by 1.2% to 33.600 tons, petroleum products also added, as much as 2.4 times, to 129.900 tons. There was a 95.3-percent jump in timber volumes from the same period a year earlier, to 236.100 tons. Shipments of ferrous metals fell 5.8% to 123.100 tons, as well as general cargo that shrank by 2.8% to 395.500 tons.

Port of Liepaja was founded in the 90-es, located on the former USSR’s naval base. Today it ranks third port in Latvia in freight traffic volumes. Half of its throughput falls on oil and bulk cargoes imported from the CIS countries, first of all, from Belarus. In 2009 the port’s output increased by 4.6%, to 4.38 million tons.
