“K” Line, which operates the all-water AWE-4 service from East Asia to the U.S. East Coast on behalf of the CKYH Alliance (Cosco, “K” LINE, Yang Ming and Hanjin Shipping), will deploy larger ships on that service in conjunction with MOL in the middle of May.
The move will deploy some additional capacity to meet rising demand, but that capacity is likely to be absorbed by slow-steaming on the service.
“K” Line said Friday the new AWE-4 service will deploy nine vessels with 5,500-TEU capacity in conjunction with MOL and also add direct calls at Savannah and Jacksonville. “K” Line will deploy seven of the larger vessels on the service, and MOL, two.
By contrast, “K” Line operates the existing AWE-4 service with eight of its own ships, each with 4,700-TEU capacity.
MOL said separately that the new service, which it calls SVE (South Vietnam-U.S. East Coast), will enable it to offer direct connections from Vietnam, South China and Singapore to the U.S. East Coast, including a call at Jacksonville and brand-new coverage to Halifax, with competitive transit times.
The revised port rotation of the enhanced AWE-4 service will be Ho Chi Minh City (on Tuesday and Wednesday), Shekou (Fri/Sat), Hong Kong, (Sat/Sun), Yantian (Sun/Mon), Singapore (Tue), Halifax (Tue/Wed), New York (Thu/Fri), Norfolk (Fri/Sat), Jacksonville (Sun/Mon), Savannah (Mon/Tue), Singapore (Sun/Mon) and back to Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday.
The revised rotation will start on May 15 with the departure of the Suez Canal Bridge from Shekou.
