Danube - Black Sea canal sees 121 ship transits, up 25.6% in Mar., 2010

The number of ship transits through the deep-water Danube - Black Sea canal in Mar. 2010 increased in comparison with same period last year to 25.6%, to 121 vessels. This March the ships passing via the canal carried 165.800 tons of numerous commodities. The Danube-Black Sea canal has seen flags of different countries: Ukraine, Russia, Georgia, Turkey, Moldova, Sierra Leone, Panama, Malta and Bulgaria, Liberia, etc. There were 26 Ukrainian-flagged ships (21.5% of the total number of ship calls). Overall, since April 2007, when the navigation along the Ukrainian part of the Danube Delta resumed 3.806 ships have passed through the Bystroye Mouth, which carried 3.820.8 tons of various cargoes, the State Enterprise Delta-Pilot press service said. DP provides piloting of vessels via the canal.

The service statement said the traffic via D-BS increased thanks to its convenient access to the sea, the availability of round-the-clock transit service, two-way traffic and lower (40-60%) transit fees than along the Romanian Sulina canal.

The deep-water Danube - Black Sea canal is part of the international transport corridor N7, connecting the North and Baltic Sea with the Black Sea, Azov Sea and the Caspian Sea.
