Cargo turnover at Riga Port down 4.2% to 7.14m tons in Q1,2010

Overall trade flows via the port of Riga (Latvia) in January-February 2010 fell by 4.2% from the same period last year, to 7.14 million tons, the Port Authority press release said.
However, the Port posts a 51.5-percent surge in general cargoes, at 1.31 million tons. Liquid cargo volumes shrank by 3%, to 1.666 million tons.

The Port facilities handled 4.16 million tons of bulked cargoes, down 14.6%, including a 24.3% drop in coal shipments, to 2.88 million tons, chemical products volumes dropped by 38.8%, to 326.000 tons

There was a 92.7-percent rise in pellets handled volumes, to 279.100 tons, as construction materials were down 13.1%, to 32.500 tons

The Port's container throughput grew by 11.9%, to 51.440 TEUs.

Freeport of Riga lies on both banks of the River Daugava (Western Dvina), the total area of the port – 6.348 ha, length of berths – 13.818 m, maximum draft of vessels at berth – 12.2 m. Transit commodities make up 80% of overall freight traffic, carried to / back the CIS countries. Last year’s statistics showed the Port of Riga handled 29.72 million tons, a year-over-year 0.5% growth.
