Rotterdam posts a 16% rise in container counts, 2.6m TEUs Q1,10

In Jan.-Mar., 2010 container total trade at the Port of Rotterdam gained 16% (vs Q1, 2009) to 2.6 million TEUs, the Port Authority statement said. Overall cargo turnover at the port during the reporting period increased by 14% to 107 million tons.

The numbers include 9.4m tons of iron ore, volumes of handled oil, 25m tons, are close to the last year’ level, as Ro-Ro cargoes gained 7% to 4 million tons.

The Port Authority said container counts grew thanks to revival of trade with Asia.

Port of Rotterdam is the largest port hub in Europe. The Port’s infrastructure is designed to handle ocean services, feeder lines, pipelines, rail and road transport. The Port’s area covers 10.500 ha. In 2009 trade flows via Rotterdam totaled 387 million tons.
