Environmental Service blames small ships for pollution, 4-5ths tons of fuel a year released into the Neva River

Small size vessels release into the Neva river from 4 to 5 tons of fuel every navigation season, Igor Berezin said speaking today at a meeting of St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly. Mr. Berezin heads the Department for Coordination of Emergency operations of the Committee on Natural Resources, Environmental Protection and Ecological Safety.

There are 43.000 small boats currently registered in St. Petersburg. They consume about 10.000 tons of fuel. The refueling operations are carried out "hit or miss", Mr. Berezin said. Each year, over 1.5% of fuel oil leak into the waters of the Neva. Besides, the Environmental Agency alleged at least 4-5.000 tons more contaminate the river.

Mr. Berezin called for imposing additional standards of the legal regulation of gas stations, as well as the legal prosecution of those who contaminate waters.
