China ports’ throughput up 22.2% to 1.81b tons, Q1,10

The first-quarter trade flows through Chinese seaports gained 22.2% to 1.81 billion tons from Q1,2009. Container counts reported by the Ministry of Transport of China also rose by 22.1% to 31.87 million TEUs.

Volumes of coal, crude oil, iron ore handled this first quarter, some 30.3% over Q1,09, heavily added to overall growth in commodities volumes, thanks to the development of generating capacity in the south of the country.

The total cargo turnover at the ports of China in 2009 amounted to about 7 billion tons.
