"The rapid strong throughput growth proves the port of Klaipeda has a real chance to overtake the Port of Tallinn and regain its leading position among the ports of the Baltic Sea", Eligijus Masiulis was quoted as saying.
Klaipeda showed in Jan.-Mar. a significant growth in container trade. The port looks for higher container volumes this year from the last year’ numbers.
An earlier report said the first-quarter results posted by the Baltic ports showed freight traffic at 31.23 million tons, or a 2.02% gain over the same period in 2009. The port of Tallinn is leading among the regional ports with its 8.481 million tons (11.7%). Port of Klaipeda comes next handling 7.396 million tons (14.2%). Ventspils Port’s trade volumes in Q1,10 totaled 7.207 million tons, down 8.1% year-on-year.
