Big Port of St. Petersburg sees 500 ship calls this year

The Big Port of St. Petersburg expects this year at least 500 passenger ship arrivals, PortNews IAA correspondent reports quoting deputy harbormaster Yuri Orlov who was speaking today at the official opening ceremony of St. Petersburg-Helsinki ferry line. In 2010 only four ships will be serviced in the cargo area of the port, because of congestion at specialized cargo berths.

"This year we have already a schedule on 410 ship calls, and this is not the limit, because a few more lines are expected to confirm their arrivals and the number will reach 500 units," says Yuri Orlov, adding that last year the Big Port and Passenger Port "Marine Façade" had handled 337 passenger ships.

As Nikolai Asaul, the Chairman of the Committee on Transport and Transit Policy of St. Petersburg who also attended the ceremony, noted that Marine Façade had not yet reached its full capacity, but everything is to be done to boost the Passenger Port’s terminals capacity.
