Freight traffics through the ports of Russia in the 1st quarter of 2010 (Q1, 2010) rose by 11% from Q1, 2009, to 122.980 million tons. The volume of dry cargoes reached 46.94 million tons, a 15.3-percent gain, liquid bulks added 8.5 percent, at 76 million tons, the Association of Commercial Sea Ports (ASSOP) statement said.
In Jan.-Mar.,2010 Russian seaports handled 96.6 million tons of outbound cargoes, a 12.6% increase year-over-year. The volumes include: coal - 14.8 million tons (+15.3%), ferrous metals - 6.97 million tons (+12%), grains - 4.7 million tons (+7.5%), mineral fertilizers - 2.6 million tons (+32.6%), containerized cargoes - 2.4 million tons (+39.5%), liquid bulk cargoes - 60.2 million tons (+12.3%).
In Q1, 2010 imports reached 7.5 million tons, up 32.1%, including goods in containers - 3.9 million tons, a 52.3% surge.
The three months statistics show there was a 5.7-percent cutback in transit cargoes passing through the Russian seaports, at 10.7 million tons. The drop was caused by lower volumes of crude and oil products at the ports of Makhachkala and Novorossiysk, the ASSOP said.

Marine Terminals Operators of the North-West Basin handled 52.2 million tons of goods, 2.9% up from the last year’s figures. Volumes of dry cargo shipments rose 11.5% to 18.3 million tons, while liquid bulks dropped 1.3%, to 33.9m tons. The Big Port of St. Petersburg posted a 16.3% gain, to 11.2 million tons, the Port of Kaliningrad, a 24.8% growth, to 3.7 million tons, Arkhangelsk Port added 1.1%, the same 3.7m tons. Other Russian ports reported a reduction in handled volumes: Vysotsk, down to 3.2 million tons (-18.39%), Murmansk, to 9.1 million tons (-2.6%).
Ports of the South Basin increased output by 3.8%, to 43.8 million tons thanks to 14.5 million tons of dry cargoes (+9.3%) and 29.3 million of liquid bulk cargoes, up 1.3%. Operators of marine terminals, at Novorossiysk Port handled 30.8 million tons (+1.4%), Tuapse Port - 4.98 million tons (+18.1).
Ports of the Far East Region handled 26.9 million tons of cargoes, showing a 51.1% surge from Q1,09 numbers. The volume include 14.1 million tons of dry cargoes (+28.1%) and 12.8 million tons (as much as 1.9 times) of liquid bulk cargoes. Several stevedores boosted their volumes in Q1, 2010: Port of Vanino – by 16.8%, to 5.6 million tons, Vladivostok – as much as 1.5 times, up to 3.9 million tons, Nakhodka - by 4.7%, to 4 million tons. Vosthochny Port’s throughput rose as much as 1.9 times to 7.7 million tons thanks to the launch of the oil transshipment facility at Kozmino. Prigorodny’s gas and oil facilities contributed to the volume growth at Sakhalin’s ports by 2.9 times, to 4.9 million tons.
