The government of Hunchun in China's Jilin Province, Korea's Dongchun Shipping, Russia's Primorsky Region Berkut, and Japan's Economic Research Institute for Northeast Asia agreed to open the route in meetings at a Northeast Asia trade and investment expo in Changchun, reported China's Xinhua new agency on Tuesday.
The 1,480 km route runs from China's Hunchun harbor to the Russian port of Zarubino, Korea's Sokcho and Japan's Niigata. Currently, goods from China’s northeast are sent overland to Dalian in Liaoning Province and then shipped to Japan by boat. The new route will cut transport time from 12 days to just 36 hours.
Under the agreement, each of the four countries will contribute their part to establishing a maritime transport firm. China and Japan will handle security of goods and the shipments, Korea will operate the ships, and Russia will handle clearing goods through customs and warehousing.
