Russian Black Sea Fleet tasked to combat piracy and terrorism, Vladimir Putin

Since the Black Sea Fleet of Russia has been actively participating in international efforts to maintain peace and security, combating piracy and terrorism the extend lease agreement on Russian Navy base in the Ukrainian Crimea signed recently was very important, Russian Govt. press service said, quoting Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

"Right now the Black Sea Fleet ships are patrolling the Gulf of Aden, are fighting against piracy. In the past year and a year earlier, they took part along with the ships of other countries in international efforts to combat terrorism, such as the Black Sea Force in the Mediterranean, and so forth," Mr. Putin was quoting as saying.

During his recent visit to Ukraine Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has signed an agreement with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych granting a 25-year lease extension (from 2017) to Russian Black Sea Fleet base in Crimea.
