VSC starts freight traffic on the upper Volga

Two pusher tugs of Volga Shipping Company have passed today through shipping lock N14 of Gorodetsky canal opening the navigation on the upper Volga, PortNews reports citing VSC’s press office. The tugboats are bound for Cherepovets to transport metal cargo to Astrakhan.

Earlier reports said the freight traffic on the lower Volga (Volzhsky city, Volgograd Oblast) had started on April 1st. Currently, the Company’s 31 ships are operating in the southern region. VSC has carried more than 123,000 tons of exported sulfur, 23% up from the same period last year.

Volga Shipping Company, founded back in 1843 ,is part of UCL Holding, an international transport group. VSC is one of the largest Russian shipping companies. Volga Shipping provides ranged services for transportation of freight, passengers on inland waterways. Volga Shipping’s fleet comprises 250 freight and passenger vessels. In 2009 the Company carried 4.5 million tons of cargoes and 359,000 passengers.
