Trucking companies and owner operators can manage a chassis fleet more cost-efficiently than an ocean carrier, said ACL, following negotiations with a broad range of truckers.
ACL will begin to phase out its carrier-owned chassis fleet for all shipper-arranged haulage shipments during 2010. On June 1, the new policy will affect all pick-ups and deliveries in Miami, Boston and the Ohio Valley. All motor carriers working directly for ACL customers in the designated areas will have to provide chassis for shipments. An identical system has been in place in Canada and Europe for many years, ACL said.
ACL carries containers, project and oversized cargo, heavy equipment and vehicles between North America and Europe, including five weekly container services with direct calls at 16 ports and one weekly roll-on/roll-off service. ACL also provides roll-on, roll-off and container service from North America to West Africa and oversized service to the Mediterranean and the world.
