Summer navigation starts in the harborage of Ust-Luga on May 1st

As the warm weather has set in, the harborage cleared of ice, Harbormaster Oleg Glukhov announces in his order (April 26, N11/10) this year’s summer navigation in the waters of the sea port of Ust-Luga (Leningrad Region) will begin after midnight, May 1, 2010, RosMorPort’s Ust-Luga statement said.

Currently, the Commercial Sea Port of Ust-Luga is being under construction funded by the Federal target program "Modernization of the Russia’s transport system " on the principles of public-private partnership. Customer and developer of the project is Ust-Luga Company.

Ust Luga (lit. mouth of the Luga) in Luga Bay in the Gulf of Finland is a multi-purpose seaport with projected capacity of 170 million tons of cargo annually. As of now, six terminals have been launched for transshipment of bulk cargoes (coal, coke, mineral fertilizer), timber and general cargoes. The port has an operating Ust-Luga - Baltiysk rail-ferry service. The launch of an oil terminal for exports of petroleum products has been scheduled for this year. The crude oil and petroleum products will be delivered to the port by railroad. In 2012 Ust Luga Port will become the end point of the Baltic Pipeline System 2 (BPS-2).

Port of Ust-Luga is located on Russia’s border with the EU. A 3.7-km approach canal and 16-m deep harborage make the port of Ust-Luga the major Russian port on the Baltic Sea capable of accommodating ships with a capacity of over 150.000dwt. The port facilities allow handling 75.000-dwt bulkers and 120.000-dwt tankers. In 2009 the Ust Luga port handled 10.3 million tons of cargoes and 1.031 ships (517 inbound and 514 outbound).
