EST starts major renovation of the first container terminal

ECT begins this May renovation work on the Delta Dedicated North (DDN) terminal on the Maasvlakte. About 40,000 m3 of concrete slabs, paving stones and concrete cement will be replaced by an equal amount of poured concrete, as well as about 20,000 transponders. Contractor Heijmans should have completed the job by January 2011, the Port of Rotterdam news release said.

The first automated container terminal, launched as the Delta/Sea-Land Terminal in 1992, DDN has been operated for 18 years. The renovation was first delayed by the great demand for terminal capacity and then by the economic crisis.

The work will be carried out in two phases, so that about half of the terminal remains operational. At the same time, several quayside cranes will be switched and modified to create more capacity for the largest ships. The loading/unloading points at the tip of the stacking lanes (the storage area for the containers) will be modified for working with two 20-foot containers per AGV (automated vehicles). Besides, the vehicles will have access to six rather than five driving loops.
