India and Poland yesterday signed a shipping agreement replacing that signed in 1956. Under the new agreement, a scheduled shipping service will operate between the two countries. It is proposed to have twelve sailings each per year. The two governments have undertaken to give to the ship, crew and cargoes of either country the same treatment as it gives to the most favoured countries.
The agreement will remain in force until either country declares its intention to terminate it by giving six months’ notice.
Dr Nagendra Singh, joint secretary, Union ministry of transport and communications, signed on behalf of the Government of India while Mr Josef Markiewica, director of the ministry of shipping, Poland, on behalf of his government.
A committee consisting of representatives of the two sides will be set up to evaluate and review the working of the agreement. Payments arising out of the agreement will be made in accordance with the Trade and Payments Agreement.
